A Baker’s Dozen
John Baker delves into The RM archive and picks out a selection of Royal Train workings covering the Queen’s reign.
THE ROYAL TRAIN
Below: In 1952, Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya with her husband Prince Philip when the news came through she had become Queen on the death of her father, King George VI. Two years later she was back in East Africa visiting Uganda, including a trip by rail hauled by two newly-built East African Railways ‘Governor’ (later EAR 60) Class 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratts.
EAR
The Queen enjoyed visiting Epsom racecourse for the Derby, and for many years travelled by train to Tattenham Corner. In this early 1960s shot, ‘Schools’ Class No. 30925 Cheltenham heads the Derby Day Royal Train through East Croydon.
