While most companies drill for oil, natural gas or water, in Iceland they drill for magma! At the Krafla volcano on the island’s northeast sector, which sits directly atop the spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge separating the North American Plate from the Eurasian Plate, magma is close to the surface. Scientists hope a probe will tell them about the composition of the magma. This may help them provide early warnings for volcanic eruptions and help with the search for geothermal energy.
