Get to know the six Smurfs starring in our 2024 calendar!

PAPA SMURF

Papa Smurf is the village chief. He turned 542 years old last spring, and is easily recongisable with his bushy white beard and red clothes. He’s a wise old Smurf who tries to keep the Smurfs from acting like crude humans. He’s also an experienced alchemist, and often saves the Smurfs from danger using his knowledge.

BRAINY SMURF

Brainy Smurf sees himself as the most responsible Smurf and believes he’s much smarter than he actually is. He spends his time preaching to others, often quoting Papa Smurf – to him, whatever Papa Smurf says is absolutely sacred! His friends still love him, even if he can be a real pain in the smurf sometimes.

SMURFETTE

Smurfette was originally created by the horrible wizard Gargamel to cause trouble among the Smurfs. Luckily, Papa Smurf used his alchemy to transform her into a ‘real Smurf’ and she became a much-beloved member of the Smurf Village. She’s full of personality and will always stand up for her Smurf friends.

BABY SMURF

Baby Smurf is a bit of a mystery – he was brought to the village by a stork one clear, starry night when the moon was blue. He was immediately adopted by all the Smurfs, and he completely changed their quiet little lives – but no one’s complaining! Everyone loves Baby Smurf, even when he’s being a bit naughty.

SMURFBLOSSOM

Smurfblossom lives in a hidden village inside the Forbidden Forest, far from the Smurf Village. She’s excitable and talkative – often, she’ll just keep talking, even if there’s nothing to say! She also has an opinion on everything. Her sunny disposition and smiling face make her a delight to be around.

FARMER SMURF

Farmer Smurf keeps to himself, often spending time on the farm instead of in the village. However, those with delicate ears should be warned – when he gets going, this little farmer has a real sailor’s vocabulary! You can always spot him wearing his trademark straw hat, green overalls and brown shoes.

Fasten off using the invisible method

Fasten off and pull live loop so yarn comes out of the top of the last st, thread onto a needle and pull through the top of the second st of the last round, pull yarn through the back loop of the last dc of the round, weave in end For a full list, see page 88 of Simply Crochet magazine

NOTES Parts of these patterns are worked in the amigurumi style. Work stitches in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. You may find it helpful to mark the first st of the round, moving it up as you work. If you are making these toys for a child under 36 months, do not use safety eyes, buttons or a cocktail stick. You can embroider eyes with stranded cotton and, for Farmer Smurf, make crochet buttons as shown in pattern.
