LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The Bermuda Triangle Manufactured Mystery

Many thanks for the article by Larry Kusche (a member of my own profession) marking forty years since the publication of his excellent book The Bermuda Triangle Mystery—Solved (November/December 2015). (Like a good librarian, he gave his full name, Lawrence David Kusche!)

The Triangle is indeed the classic manufactured mystery, and I call many people’s attitude to claims of paranormal powers and phenomena in the Bermuda Triangle approach—asking “We have a mystery. How can we solve it?” not “Is there a mystery? Does anything require explanation?” As Kusche shows, the answer to the question “Why do ships and aircraft vanish mysteriously in that (remarkably elastic!) part of the Atlantic?” is simple: they don’t.

A British television program on someone’s theories about the Triangle had a contact telephone number (it was before texting and email) and I called it, but the woman who answered could only say that the man had solved the mystery; I just couldn’t convey to her that there was no mystery.

I recommend Kusche’s contribution, also called “The Bermuda Triangle,” to the book Science and the Para normal edited by George O. Abell and Barry Singer (Scribner, 1981) as a good summary of his work on the subject.
