The tabletop escape room genre feels a little played out at this point. Jordan Sorenson is aware of this sentiment, as he takes extra care to offer something novel with Unboxed. Instead of deconstructing puzzles and assembling clues to escape a location, you are asked to piece together errant components with unusual iconography in order to deduce the ruleset for a board game. This is a terrific concept and wonderfully approaches the hobby’s most gruelling task - learning a new game - as an opportunity for exercising intuition and thoughtful speculation.
