The Artist Award Sketch for Survival

We are delighted to announce that The Artist Award in the recent Sketch for Survival competition goes to Sarah Rhiannon for her sensitive painting Look Up (above). Sarah writes: ‘My love of wildlife came long before I started painting and since picking up a paintbrush in 2020, it’s wonderful to combine the two, especially when the latter can help the former through initiatives such as Sketch for Survival. I watched this young lion in the Serengeti enjoying the breeze in the treetops. I was drawn to explore the dappled light that the tree cast and aimed to capture the intensity and curiosity of the lioness’s gaze whilst keeping a loose, impressionistic style. My background in zoology helps inform my painting decisions. Through previous wildlife-related jobs I have been fortunate to travel p Sarah Rhiannon Look Up, oil, 12x10in (30.5x25.5cm) around the world and see incredible animals in their natural environment, which has given me so much inspiration as I paint from my North Devon studio.
