Tranmere left it late before delivering the knockout blow required to give their fans a Boxing Day treat, as they overcame Macclesfield Town at Prenton Park and bounced back to the top of the National League. A shivering bumper crowd of 7,274 appeared to be set to leave without a goal for their troubles, but with just seven minutes to go a Jeff Hughes header somehow made it passed goalkeeper Craig Ross and an attempted goal-line clearance
into the net, handing Rovers all three points.
