Tom Saville and wife Patricia
EVER
WONDERED HOW OUR CROSSWORD IS
compiled? You might think it is computer-generated. You would be wrong. The puzzle that so many of us ponder, debate on social media and require a stiff drink to complete is painstakingly compiled by none other than angler, fly-tyer and author Tom Saville, who shortly after this magazine goes on sale celebrates his 100th birthday. Impressive, I am sure you will agree.
But then, Tommy is remarkable. He caught his first salmon in 1958 on the River Conwy in Wales. His Nottingham-based company Tom C Saville Ltd was famous for introducing new and unusual fly-tying materials to the UK market. He invented the Crathie salmon fly, which has been responsible for catching hundreds of salmon worldwide. Tommy is a renowned pianist, composer and arranger and led the Nottingham Jazz Orchestra from 1995 to 2011. He is also the author of Reservoir Trout Fishing, published in 1991. In later life, Tommy presented the Jazz Incorporated programme on BBC Radio Nottingham.
