Bud Harrelson, the power-starved but slick fielding shortstop during the New York Mets’ 1969 unlikely run to the World Series title, was the face of the Mets for more than five decades as a player, coach and manager in the early 1990s.
Harrelson also helped lead the Mets to the 1973 National League Championship Series where the shortstop tangled with Cincinnati’s Pete Rose when Rose slid hard into second base. When the play was over and the two men faced each other, Rose provided a shove, and the melee was on.
