You can still find Royal Desserts pudding on grocery store shelves, but you’d have to look awfully hard. These days it’s a niche product, the RC Cola of the powdered dessert market.

But that wasn’t always the case. There was a time back in the 1950s when Royal was the preferred pudding of sports fans and starstruck teens alike, with boxes flying off store shelves thanks to a clever marketing promotion. While other companies posted homemakerfriendly recipes on their box backs, Royal won over consumers with collectible cards that could be trimmed off and stored in special folders.
