Apopular double date for artists on the cabaret circuit was an early show at the City Varieties Theatre in Leeds, followed by a midnight performance at the Top Ten Club in Huddersfield. The club was owned and operated by Joe Marsden, a Yorkshire chicken farmer and entrepreneur who had Yorkshire printed right through his middle like a stick of rock. ‘No mess Joe’ was his nickname and if you did mess with him, you were history.
