ssembling for track rules meeting The 21st running of The Big One, a vintage karting event dedicated to remembering and preserving the rear engine karts and engines of American manufacture that were raced from 1956 to 1972, took place at Fremont Raceway Park over Labour Day Weekend, an American public holiday that marks the end of their summer. What started out in 2001 as a few enthusiasts getting together to enjoy their old karts has become one of the best vintage karting events in America. The principals at Rear Engine American Racers, Bob Kurkowski and Rob Voska, both members of the Vintage Karter Hall of Fame, have been continuously promoting the event since 2001. From the promoters perspective the meeting attracted a pleasing attendance of enthusiasts with an interest in classic and historical karts from across the USA and neighbouring Canada. The Big One is first and foremost a social gathering of folks interested in the karts that pioneered the sport. Everyone who passed through the circuit gate received a complimentary Lee’s famous traditional recipe chicken lunch with home-style sides and biscuits, all of which was included in the admission cost. For those that took to the track the meeting was planned to be two days of sideways sliding fun on the picturesque quarter mile asphalt track constructed 61 years ago in June 1961 on the outskirts of Fremont by the Hasselbach family. Fremont is a small town in northern Ohio roughly half way between Toledo and Cleveland.

THE “OFFICIAL” DRIVERS – THAT’S A LAUGH!
The thing that at times amuses me, but at the same time saddens me, being as I am notoriously bipolar, is that the stupidity of the drivers is undergoing an evolution far greater than that of the means by which they race.
