“Nearly half of the Championship cricket is played in the first couple of months. It’s a nightmare to get right because you’ve got so many competing interests. My starting point is always what’s best for the players to be able to maximise their potential – for fast bowlers, opening batsmen, spinners in particular. I completely get that’s not necessarily the starting point for a county chair or for the county members, and it’s so hard to keep everyone happy.
