As I chat with American marathonrecord holder Deena Kastor, her conversation brims with such positivity that it’s immediately infectious. But it wasn’t always so. More than two decades ago, when the now 45-year-old was on the brink of becoming a professional runner, she was teetering on the edge of burnout, berating herself with negative selftalk and running with the only tactic she knew – to go hard.
