Q I’m racing abroad for the first time next month – what do I need to bear in mind?
A Racing abroad means you need to be more organised as you’ll need to book flights and accommodation and find out whether you need a visa. In Italy and France, you’ll also need a medical certificate saying you’re fit enough to run.
Set up a spreadsheet to ensure you’ve covered the bases. Bear in mind that in some countries not everyone speaks English, so allow extra time for race registration (don’t book a sightseeing tour 10 minutes aft er you’ve registered!) and also for getting to the start line and finding the correct race pen.
Take any race nutrition you need with you; foreign countries may not stock your favourite brands. Do remember the 100ml rule if you’re flying with cabin bags only, and take sachets of powdered sports drink if you can’t take liquids.
