Writing’s a doddle if you’re used to herding sheep with a baby in a papoose, Amanda Owen, the Yorkshire Shepherdess, tells Lynne Hackles

MY WRITING DAY

Have you ever complained that you don’t have enough time to write? What if, like Amanda Owen, known as the Yorkshire Shepherdess, you had nine children, a 2,000-acre farm, a thousand sheep plus other animals and projects? How does Amanda manage?

‘I’m up at 6am and every day is different,’ she says. ‘There’s great variation in what I do. The daily rounds on the farm differ from season to season so I decide which jobs are most pressing. When it’s dark the farming stops. Sometimes there’ll be a gap and I’ll write through the day. Other times I’ll write into the early hours.’
