With The Invisible Women’s Club, I knew from the start that I wanted to write about female friendship. Specifically, I wanted to write about new friendships that are forged later in life. As we age, we tend to stay committed to the long-established friendships we have made over the years but don’t necessarily feel like we have as many opportunities to make new friends.
I wanted to explore what it is to make a friend in later life, curious as to what factors might stand in the way, what the challenges are and what it’s possible to discover in a later-in-life friendship, both in another and in oneself.
