We are Just so Happy with our House

Jan and Doug Wightman have no desire to move, even after 40 years of living here

‘I think it is called contentment,’ Doug, a retired GP deliberates. His wife Jan, a painter, explains that they bought their children up here, so it is full of happy memories and the house has grown and shrunk with them. ‘There was plenty of room for our children when they were growing up, but now that they have left it does not seem too big for just the two of us, it has contracted perfectly.’

The wood-burning stove is by Franco belge. The armchairs are from ikea and the sofa was bought in the 1970s from habitat. doug made the coffee table in his workshop. The walls are painted in eau de nil, from the Period colours range by dulux. The blankets are from the Tartan blanket company

They bought the house as a young couple in 1974. ‘We had moved about a lot for Doug’s work and when he had the opportunity to join a practice, we were keen to settle down and have not moved since,’ Jan laughs. ‘We actually moved in with the sellers,’ Doug remembers. ‘There was a three-month overlap between them moving out and us moving in. We lived together with them and their young children perfectly happily, agreed on a price and they moved out.’ The previous owners are still friends; they have also continued to live in the same village.
