In the early 2000s, the term ‘digital backlot’ began to settle in the lexicon of visual effects. Fabricated sets and environments have always been a feature of cinema. At that point, digital VFX production began to explore and establish the merits of the digital backlot; an environment created entirely in the computer into which live-action elements and actors were placed.
