TEXAS-BASED SOUTHWEST Airlines has announced a major shift in its baggage policy as it begins charging some customers for checked luggage. For over 50 years, the low-cost carrier implemented its “bags fly free” policy, allowing passengers to check in two bags at no extra cost. However, from May 28, only passengers who have the highest status with the airline’s Rapid Rewards loyalty scheme and those who pay the highest “Business Select” fare will be permitted to check in two bags. Those with the lower A-List loyalty status and those who hold a Southwest Airlines branded credit card will be allowed to check in one bag for free. All other customers will be charged. Its loyalty programme will also see changes, with more points given to customers who purchase more expensive fares and the reverse for those who purchase cheaper tickets.
In a statement, the LCC said that these “strategic moves, aimed to deepen and reward loyalty between Southwest and its most engaged customers, create new opportunities to reach consumers who value fare above everything else”.
