One of the more obscure Second World War special forces units was the little-known Raiding Support Regiment. Bosleys (23% buyer’s premium) of Marlow sold an embroidered cap badge from this regiment for £3100 (estimate £500-800) on January 25.
A special forces unit closely allied to David Stirling’s Special Air Service, the RSR was formed in October 1943 at Azzib in Palestine under the command of Lt Col Sir Thomas Devitt Bt, formerly of the Seaforth Highlanders. Its purpose was to mount raids behind the lines in the Dalmatian islands, Yugoslavia, Greece and Albania.
