Arms and amour sales often throw out interesting talking points in the way of accessories. The Antony Cribb sale on November 9 produced two. Pictured above right is a late 16th or early 17th century German wheel-lock spanner which sold to an online bidder at £90. Without a spanner to wind the mechanism which rotated the serrated wheel against the sparking flint such weapons were useless, yet few wheel-locks are now to be found with their original keys.
