The many states of the market
Rembrandt prints
Rembrandt initially created impressions from a large plate measuring 14½ x 10in (37 x 26cm) in c.1632. Christ turns his back as the rising Lazarus is bathed in light. This posthumous impression from the final state of nine sold for £5200 at Forum.
a second version created from a smaller 6 x 4½in (16 x 12cm) plate produced in 1642. It is less ‘finished’ and includes more focus on the imaginary landscape (a common feature of Rembrandt’s later prints). This second state impression was issued in the 18th century (possibly by the French collector Claude Henry Watelet). It took £1800 at Forum.
