This Aesthetic movement oak standing corner cabinet was probably made by Gillows to a design by Bruce Talbert (1838-81). The castellated cornice detail above the bevel glazed door is identical to the moulding on Talbert’s ‘Pet’ sideboard exhibited at the 1872 London International Exhibition, and the ‘Pericles’ sideboard exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exhibition.

The cabinet has a guide of £2000-3000 at Dreweatts’ sale of Modern Design & Decorative Art in Newbury on October 15. dreweatts.com*

It is signed by Jack B Toogood, in whose family it descended until 2012.
