Th ere was a most unusual billboard outside the supermarket in Glasgow. This is what it said: ‘Quieter hour. Every Saturday from 9am to 10am, we are making this store a calmer and quieter environment.’
I wondered how this could be achieved. Will people not chat? Will children not scream or shout? Will the people on the tills not talk to the customers? This has intrigued me and I am interested in this search for quietness.
