The daffodil has to be one of the most loved flowers in the garden, writes Tim Keyworth.
The arrival of the showy blooms is eagerly anticipated by amateur and professional gardeners alike and tends to be embraced with great gusto. It is for many the first sign of spring and promises that the lighter, warmer days are not too far away and that there is light at the end of the tunnel of what is sometimes a long, dank winter.
They have a bold and fascinating history. Mother’s day has not long passed and the humble daffodil is often the flower of choice for this occasion as well as, of course, being the national flower of Wales. It us a favourite of many writers, arguably the most notable being William Wordsworth, who took great inspiration from them in his poetry.
