MARY DECKER and Zola Budd have been in the news lately with the release of a documentary film called The Fall plus a book called Collision Course, but who would have won the 1984 Olympic 3000m if Decker had not hit the deck?
AW held a quick poll on Twitter and 40% went for Budd, with 36% plumping for Decker and only 24% saying Maricica Puica, the gold medallist from the ill-fated final, would have won if everyone had stayed on their feet.
We also asked runners on Twitter if they’d ever fallen in a race and 73% said “yes – and I finished” with 6% “yes – and failed to finish” and 21% claiming they’d never fallen.
