ASHOT PUT stalwart, one-lap hurdles recordholder, Sixties sprinter, marathon pioneer, two coaching greats and a world title-winning relay team were among the latest inductees to England Athletics’ hall of fame.
Since the idea began in 2008, the achievements of athletes, coaches and administrators of yesteryear have been recognised – and last Saturday night at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham a further six individuals plus a relay team were named on an evening that also saw England Athletics present its annual volunteer awards (see overleaf, p16-17).
This glitzy event sees unsung heroes who make the sport tick rub shoulders with well known athletics stars and the latest gathering drew more than 300 guests, from past masters such as Ron Hill, Dave Moorcroft and Basil Heatley through to current performers like Dina Asher-Smith, Hannah England, Tom Bosworth and Isobel Pooley.
