GOOD TIMING

- Steve Smythe, result editor
IT was bad luck that really great track weather in Britain only happened after the Olympic team was named. However, athletes had known all year when the deadline was and what was required. This weekend the likes of Richard Kilty, Joel Fearon, David Omoregie and Charlene Thomas produced great performances but irrelevant in terms of Rio as the teams were finalised and, this time, it wasn’t British selectors being elitist, inflexible or bloody-minded!
RUDISHA IN TOP FORM
HUNGARY
Szekesfehervar, July 17/18
OLYMPIC champion David Rudisha returned to winning ways as he led home the 800m in a world-leading 1:43.35, well clear of Jonathan Kitlit’s 1:44.16.
Akani Simbine won the 100m in a South African record of 9.89 ahead of Asafa Powell, who ran 9.92 for his 96th sub-10.
Simbine also won the 200m in 20.16.
Olympic champion Kirani James kept his unbeaten record at 400m with a win in 44.60.
Former world champion Donald Thomas gained a surprise PB win in 2.37m ahead of Bohdan Bondarenko’s 2.35m.
Balazs Baji gained a hurdles home victory in 13.33 after world No.1 Omar McLeod crashed out.
The best competitive event in the field was the women’s shot as Valerie Adams edged Christina Schwanitz 20.14 and Anita Marton improved her national record to 19.49m in fourth behind Michelle Carter’s 19.56m.
There were predictable Polish wins in the hammer as Pawel Fajdek’s 81.11m and Anita Wlodarczyk’s 78.10 left the opposition well in arrears.
Sophie Hitchon was over 70 metres again in fifth and while well down on the Pole within two metres of the rest. Nick Miller was again below his early-season from and finished eighth but did beat Olympic champion Krisztian Pars.
