AW – Athletics Weekly Magazine  |  AW March 2022
The first global event of what is a packed 2022 is almost upon us and the March issue of AW sees the team provide an in-depth look ahead to the World Athletics Indoor Championships, which is taking place in Belgrade.
As part of our preview, we feature an exclusive interview with pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis, a young man who is dominating his event but is reaching – literally – for even greater heights. He will be front and centre in the Serbian capital this month, but resident AW statistician Steve Smythe looks at all the facts and figures to provide an invaluable form guide and predict the identity of the athletes who will be right in the medal hunt when it comes to all of the other events. He also relives some of the finest World Indoors performances from down the years.
We also continue our State of Play series, this time looking at the TV coverage and presentation of athletics. Commentators Tim Hutchings and Paul Swangard both have strong views on how the sport needs to develop, insisting that keeping the status quo is no longer an option. There's also an examination of athletics in America, with Chris O'Hare providing his insight into the college system and Peta Bee providing a useful guide as to the pros and cons of moving Stateside, as well as outlining how an athlete might go about choosing a University in America.
Our Performance section is, as ever, crammed with useful advice and insights about how to improve while Paul Freary gives his verdict on some of the very latest footwear to hit the market.
On top of all of that, Tanni Grey-Thompson is our special guest on Ask the Athlete, Eamonn Coghlan is the star of My Greatest Race and Verity Ockenden takes you behind the scenes and into the athletes' Call Room.
