AW – Athletics Weekly Magazine  |  May 2026
The May issue of AW takes an in-depth look at the summer ahead and speaks to a number of the athletes who will be in the thick of the action.
There’s an exclusive interview with Josh Kerr, who is targeting Hicham El Guerrouj’s mile world in London in July, and he speaks about the inspirations behind his lofty ambitions, as well as going after Commonwealth gold in Glasgow and why Scotland will always be home for him.
Cooper Lutkenhaus will be another one to watch, with the 17-year-old having become the youngest ever world champion, either indoors or out, after his 800m win at the World Indoor Championships in Poland. He talks about trying to keep things normal when his sporting life is anything but, how he breaks down his event and how much he thinks he can progress.
The standards of combined events are continuing to rise, too, and Simon Ehammer – the Swiss who set the world indoor heptathlon record – discusses that landmark performance, as well as his hopes for the decathlon outdoors and his aims for the European Championships in Birmingham.
Two-time world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson will be a focus for the home crowd there, and she provides insight on the art of constructing a heptathlon score at the top level.
There’s plenty of opinion in the pages, too, with columnist Katharine Merry setting the scene for the summer, while the recently retired sprinter Adam Gemili gives his views on the key areas of the sport and where it needs to evolve.
The performance section also features training insight from steeplechaser Sarah Tait, coaching insight from sprints guru Stuart McMillan and reviews of the latest footwear that will give you speed and control.
