HOUSE OF KINGS AND QUEENS
Lee Price’s powerful new photography exhibition — on display until 24 September at the Humber Street Gallery, in Hull — shines a light on the lives of Sierra Leone’s LGBT+ community. The country is one of those where homosexual acts are illegal, and its capital, Freetown, is Hull’s sister city. Although the law is rarely enforced, ridicule and harassment often keep queer citizens in the closet, but a young transgender woman has created a safe space, dubbed The House of Kings and Queens, for those in need. Through his photographs, Lee captures the secrecy surrounding the lives of those who visit the house, as well as the feeling of liberation it affords them.
