Did you know that up to four million people in the UK are lactose intolerant? Symptoms include wind, bloating and diarrhoea – not much fun. Not to mention denying yourself delicious foods such as cheese, yoghurt, milkshakes and ice-creams. ‘Those with lactose intolerance are potentially missing out on the benefits associated with dairy products, such as calcium for maintaining bone health, and iodine, which ensures the thyroid functions correctly,’ says Judy More, dietitian and registered nutritionist.
Other nutrients in dairy include vitamins A, B1, B12 and vitamin D, which is also essential for growing healthy bones and avoiding osteoporosis.
