There’s a very exclusive club in world rowing – the sub 5:40 club. Membership is limited to those athletes who have publically posted a 2000m ergo time below 5 minutes and 40 seconds.
Heading into the summer racing season this year the club had just three members; New Zealand’s Olympic champion Rob Waddell, Matthias Siejkowski of Germany and Belarussian Pavel Shurmei.
However there are now two new members. On May 31st Canada’s Olympic silver medallist, Conlin McCabe, posted his time of 5:39.4 on Instagram.
Two weeks later it was the turn of Australia’s Josh Dunkley-Smith who did a 5:39.6 (barefoot and rating 33 according to the photo on imgur).
