LETTER OF THE WEEK
From Ingolstadt to Valletta
Your article On This Day in 1966 (22 February) was headed with a photo of my brother Stuart driving an Audi that was the subject of a long-term test. Stuart was on the editorial staff at Autocar for many years and had previously been involved in testing the first Audi to be imported to the UK, a Super 90.
On his recommendation, I ordered a Super 90 in 1968 and had it delivered to Malta, where I had been posted with the Lancashire Regiment. I had persuaded four other members of the unit to also buy Audis, so there was a 70, a couple of 80s and a Variant estate
together with my Super 90. Audi was so pleased with this that it sent an engineer to make sure we were all happy with our cars. He drove mine at breakneck speed on the shiny Maltese roads before declaring that all was to his satisfaction. The local agent, Mr Bonnici, was delighted, and I was presented with a pair of Audi cufflinks for my efforts. At the end of our tour, I had the car shipped back and several years later saw it when driving through Tetbury in Gloucestershire.
I’ve had several Audis since then.
