Mk5 Mustang is good looking, a blast to drive and temptingly priced
As I sauntered through a car park recently with a friend who is similarly anorakish about cars, he was shocked by a bulky and curiously mustachioed electric SUV. “That’s a Mustang?” Yes, I was afraid to tell him it was. There was an upside to this discovery, though, which was that we then spent a happy few hours looking for a proper one to buy.
Where to start? It’s best to go back to the beginning, and we found a 1966 fastback with a 4.7-litre V8 attached to an automatic gearbox, imported from the homeland in 2018. It really did look quite stunning and there were receipts for new shock absorbers and springs. The private seller’s asking price was £65,000. I’m sure that could have been negotiated downwards, but for what was a showroom-fresh example of a great all-weather coupé, that was a bargain compared with some six-figure ‘classics’.
