The theory of everything
I feel very sorry for those young people who fail their driving theory test, because it’s much harder now than it was in my day.
When I obtained my driving licence in 1972, I didn’t have to do a written test; the examiner simply fired questions about the Highway Code at me in the car. However, I’ve been driving long enough that I consider that I know enough about the subject to stay safe and free from points on my licence.
I was therefore somewhat alarmed when I took a mock theory test that I certainly didn’t know all the answers and failed (42 correct out of 50 multiple-choice questions).
I don’t really have a defence for my failure, other than that several of the questions weren’t about driving. For instance: what should one do upon arriving at a crash involving burning victims?
I urge anyone who drives to take a practice theory test on the government’s website.

Hobson’s choice
So, regarding the zero-emission vehicle mandate, ‘T Man’ has “never seen this type of action by a government to force people to buy things they don’t want” (11 October).
