The best way not to get stuck in a swollen ford (that’s a part of a river shallow enough for you to cross it, not a Focus with a blown head gasket) is not to drive into it. Iknow that not because of experience but proximity. The river that runs at the bottom of my garden offers up numberplates, trims and sills. For that reason, although an SUV isn’t always the answer, extra ride height certainly does help a bit, provided that you’re cautious.
