Here’s how fast a card can get hot in a short amount of time. In last month’s issue of Beckett Baseball, Max Scherzer’s 2008 Topps Update RC didn’t make the monthly Hot List of the most popular cards in the industry – a list compiled by secondary market sales and sales volume.
It wasn’t a part of the 25-card list. This month? Turn to page 4 and you’ll see the card has stormed from unranked to No.2 on the Hot List, pushing the value of raw copies to the $150 range. Part of that rise has to be attributed to Scherzer’s reaching the 3,000 career strikeouts mark when he fanned San Diego’s Eric Hosmer on September 12 – which also happened to be a game in which Scherzer made a bid for a perfect game that ended in the eighth inning when Hosmer doubled.
