March 1st is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day. Yes, that’s right – if you are a peanut butter lover, this is YOUR day.
While finding the fact that ‘everything’ has it’s own day these days very amusing, I thought this would be a good opportunity to use my editor’s ramble to take a look at this excellent food source for cyclists.
The best peanut butter is simply that; roasted ground peanuts with no salt, sugar, preservative chemicals or horrible palm
oil, added. Brands such as Meridian can be found in most supermarkets and are 100% peanuts, nothing else.
The nutritional profile of peanuts boasts many benefits; relatively low in carbohydrate, they have a glycemic index (GI) of just 14, and are complex carbohydrates, the type the body breaks down gradually and so will not cause spikes in blood sugar.
Although high in fats and energy, (peanut butter itself is 100% cholesterol-free),
the fats are of the ‘healthy’ kind – monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat – with the monounsaturated fats coming from oleic acid (helps cholesterol levels), and the polyunsaturated fats from linoleic acid (helps build muscle).
