What should make their achievements all the more spectacular is the adversity they rebounded from. Both faced ridicule for early defeats; Wladimir lost to Ross Puritty, Sanders and Brewster before cementing his name among the greats while Vitali, after enduring cruel criticism for quitting while injured against Byrd, lost to Lewis and was forced out of boxing for three of his peak years because of his damaged body. Both came back in a manner that few heavyweights ever have. Particularly in this modern age where losses decorate records like nails in a coffin, it is rare indeed for fighters in any weight.
