Building Regs: closing the performance gap
Most days of my working week, I find myself sitting on the London Underground, while the tannoy rings out “mind the gap” at almost every station. This always lends my thoughts towards “mend the gap” – ie the performance gap that occurs between designing and building a scheme.
Some of the 3.5 million people a day who use the tube own or rent a property that is underperforming. In fact, new government data shows that 19 million homes need better insulation – that’s two thirds of the housing stock! Many of my fellow commuters are architects, surveyors, builders. So, the question is: how can we share knowledge on how to mend the breach within the construction industry? After all, those are the people you’re trusting with your project.
