Windows and doors have a huge impact on the final look of your home and protect it from the elements, all while framing views and allowing in natural light. So, you’ll want robust and high-performance units that still look good. Packed with natural charm and warmth, sustainable timber has always been a popular choice for self builders and renovators alike.
Advances in technology means that modern products can have fantastic longevity – typically at least 60 years. “The framework is made up of several pieces of laminated wood that create a robust product,” says Matt Higgs, director at Kloeber. “So, the timber is not prone to warping, bowing or swelling. These are highly engineered products with a long service life.” Timber is naturally a highly insulating material, too – more so than aluminium – so it’s easy to meet the stringent Building Regs for efficiency (see box overleaf).
Look for reputable companies with a long history of success. Some firms will offer a supply and fit service – this gives you peace of mind that if anything goes wrong, you’ve got a single point of contact. Others might simply be manufacturers, but should put you in touch with a trusted partner installer, so you can be assured that the quality of installation and aftercare will be top-notch.
