Build It Magazine January 2012 Back Issue

This month’s issue is hot on the heels of news that the government's strategy for housing has given self build, or as they call it custom homes, a big mention. The strategy outlines a programme worth £30m to help individuals build their own homes, and offer short-term finance for independent projects. As far as I’m concerned, it’s another reason for you to make 2012 the year to self build – and the January edition is bound to inspire you.

We pay homage to the nation’s number one material, with a bumper timber special. Apart from its obvious aesthetic beauty, did you know that wood has the best thermal insulation properties of any mainstream construction material? What’s more, the use of timber frame in new build housing has grown from 2% in the 1980s to around 27% today. The fantastic material is a self build favourite, and to showcase its versatility we’ve got a myriad of features from frames and cladding to doors and flooring.

This month also marks the start of three fabulous new series. If you’re toying with the idea of embarking on a project, and need a push in the right direction, Mike Hardwick’s How to self build guide will prove invaluable. If you’re at the next stage, and thinking about house plans, Julian Owen provides some valuable information on choosing a designer. For those with budget concerns, we’ve got some some precious financial advice from costs expert Bryan Spain.

And don’t forget our fantastic readers’ homes. The cover house belongs to the Jerges, who have struck a balance between contemporary and traditional to create a magnificent dwelling.

Enjoy the start of a new season, take the bull by the horns and Build It in 2012!
