Thousands of people flocked to the streets of Budapest to demand an end to Soviet rule after police shot several anti-communist activists.Demonstrators also demanded democratic, free elections and press freedom. However, the Hungarian Revolution was brutally put down by Soviet tanks and troops after 12 days, leaving thousands of Hungarians wounded or dead. Another 200,000 fled as refugees.
