Midsummer provides the ideal opportunity to turn back the clock, to trim off the mildewed leaves from the catmint and chop back the aquilegia and cranesbills to their crowns for a fresh new flush of foliage. It’s also high time to pull out the sow-thistles that have grown to waist height without anyone noticing, and the brambles secretively coiling their way through the shrubs. A few hours of huffing and puffing later and there are plenty of gaps to fill, but what to fill them with?
