The Arran branch of the Saltire Society is holding the second meeting of its 2016/17 syllabus at Altachorvie on Wednesday October 12. The speaker will be the esteemed social historian, former singer and musician, Mary Fleming
Her chosen theme, ‘Ballads and Blethers’ promises to delight, inform, entertain and enthral those attending with her extensive knowledge of poetry and song.
Mary’s membership of the Saltire Society stems back to the 1960s, indeed it was the society that introduced her to the clarsach which she was playing at the Edinburgh Fringe when she met her husband. Mary said: ‘We have such an incredible heritage of Scottish poems.’ She found ‘Scots poetry enough to write several books’, though in the end, just one was written, ‘Clarsach, Cramasie and Crowdie’. Mary will read extracts, weaving a rich tapestry of knowledge and reminiscence throughout her narrative.
