TOO FEW HOME RUNS
ON a weekend where there was a British Diamond League, national league matches and some quality open meetings, in my view stil far too many Brits competed abroad. The times at Newham confirmed domestic races can yield PBs. I was also disappointed less than 50 Britons had opportunities at Birmingham. Why couldn’t there be more domestic non-Diamond League races like the women’s 1500m?
RECORDS GO IN IRELAND
IRELAND
All Ireland Schools Championships, Tullamore, June 5
IT was a case of the girls stealing the show on a day of glorious sunshine at the centenary Championships in Tullamore.
Michaela Walsh took the Lar O’Byrne athlete of the meet award for winning the senior girls’ shot put in 14.91m and setting a meeting hammer record of 56.90m.
She also led her school to the senior girls’ team title.
Sharlene Mawdsley was equally impressive as she captured double gold in the senior girls’ sprints in record time. She won the 100m in 11.80 and the 200m in 23.62.
Not to be outdone was Ciara Neville in the intermediate ranks as she bagged triple gold - the 100m in 11.86, the 200m in 24.67 and a blistering anchor leg to nip the victory on the line.
Another star in the girls’ sprints was Patience Jumbo Gula, who won the 100m in 12.28 and 200m in 25.35.
Star of the boys’ sprinters was Aaron Sexton, who set a meeting intermediate record in the 100m of 10.86 and took gold in the 200m in 21.85.
In the junior girls’ discus Megan Lenihan bettered Marita Walton’s 41-year-old meeting record of 38.28m with a stunning 39.56m.
Sarah Healy was different class in the under-16 girls’ mile with a meet record of 5:03.57.
In the intermediate girls’ pole vault, Ellie McCartney achieved 3.60m ahead of Emma Coffey as the first three bettered the event record of 2.95m set by McCartney last year.
Jordan Hoang recorded 14.35m to win the Olympic trophy in the senior boys’ triple jump.
Amy Rose Farrell stuck to the form books to win the intermediate girls’ 3000m in 10:15.99, while Jack O’Leary won a high-quality senior boys 5000m in 14:54.65.
Ailbhe Doherty achieved an ambitious double in the minor girls’ events. After winning bronze in the 100m in 12.43, she won the 800m in a record time of 2:18.18.
