Highways England lays path to net zero
HIGHWAYS ENGLAND (HE) has laid out bold emissionsreducing plans as part of its strategy to make the UK’s road network carbon neutral by 2050.
HE forecasts that emissions levels will come down naturally as electric vehicles become more widely used and is seeking to encourage that transition with a scheme to incentivise electric van adoption and a promise to accelerate EV charging infrastructure development in the run-up to 2025. A blueprint outlining this particular strategy is due by 2023. HE will also launch a new training programme to help traffic officers deal with on-road incidents involving EVs and propose an approach to government-backed road trials of zero-emissions heavy goods vehicles.
