Trains often signal trouble down the line in Agatha Christie’s novels. That’s certainly the case in Murder Is Easy (1939), which begins with a police officer, Luke Fitzwilliam, meeting Lavinia Pinkerton on a journey to London. Pinkerton is convinced that there’s a killer at large in the village of Wychwood under Ashe – a conviction Fitzwilliam begins to share in earnest when his new acquaintance, who is on her way to Scotland Yard, is found dead.
Set in 1954, a new BBC One adaptation makes perfect Christmas viewing. David Jonsson (Rye Lane) stars as Fitzwilliam, while Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey) plays Pinkerton. A strong supporting class of familiar faces includes Douglas Henshall, Mark Bonnar and Tamzin Outhwaite.
